Rock-Ola 451 customisation

I came across a Rock-Ola 451 in very bad condition as a part-ex on one of my other machines. At first I was just going to break it down and keep the good parts but then I thought it’d be interesting to strip it down to its nuts and bolts and see if I could build it back up again, customising the colour scheme as I went. It will need new ‘glasses’ for the door and a lot of other attention but it should turn out quite nice. I haven’t got the photos sorted just yet but when I do I’ll post them.

If it was a ‘classic’ then I’d obviously restore it as near to original as possible but with a machine like this the value of the jukebox doesn’t warrant that sort of expense. So I am mainly doing this one out of interest, just to see what I can make of it.

It’s a really tidy looking jukebox and has a very gutsy stereo sound loud enough to rock anyone’s party.

The jukebox I am working on just now is a Wurlitzer Carillon from 1972. It plays 50 singles, which is 100 selections. The mechanism was in a bit of a bad state so I stripped off everything right down to the base plate and gave it an aluminium finish.

I then had the interesting task of putting the gearbox and gripper assembly back on, which took a bit of head scratching to get everything lined up correctly, but the end result was worth it.

I have two jukeboxes for sale just now and I am working on a Wurlitzer Carillon which is a funky little jukebox, very compact and a great starter box.

The Lyric E is below and has been fully refurbished, including new sides. The retail price is £2650.

Welcome to the Jukebox Doctor’s blog. This year I will be doing more of the same, i.e. jukebox repairs of Wurlitzer and Rock-Ola jukeboxes and selling some of my own refurbished machines from my workshop in Sheffield.

So far this year I have finished a Wurlitzer Lyric E from 1964 and I am now working on a Wurlitzer Carillon.

I also do a lot of repairs on the Wurlitzer One More Time (see above), changing bubble tubes and exchanging laser units and any other fascinating fault that arises.
